For statistical purists, a few riders
 - as far as I know, the ranking above depends on links and traffic from other Ebuzzing registered blogs. That cuts out plenty of traffic sources, and it also means if you're not registered, you don't get in the listing.
 - Ebuzzing isn't that good at spotting all said links, based on the evidence of my own blog!
 - most of my traffic actually comes via Twitter and Facebook, not sure how well this is picked up either.
 - Cranmer, the top blog in this category, is in the 'politics' category, and apparently you're not allowed to cover more than one subject.  Heresy Corner would be somewhere in here too, if it were allowed.
 - but, in the absence of Church Mouse and Rev Lesley, someone has to keep new media lists alive, so....

It's quite US-centric, but the best ranking device for Christian blogs is this one, which combines several different indicators into a single rating.

 - you'll find this blog in the top 20 if you can remember what it was called 2 years ago. That seems to be mostly on the strength of Twitter - on average over the last few months there have been 3-4 links from other blogs and around 100 retweets. Makes me wonder where the traffic came from BT (Before Twitter).

and I'm going to link to The Vicars Wife (65) for no particular reason, but just to see if it helps her ranking next month. Actually, we could all do it and see what happens.....

2 other blogs which have a strong 'religion' content but aren't in this subgroup are Cranmer (who would be runaway no. 1) and Heresy Corner, who would slot in at no 8 just above Peter Saunders 'Christian Medical Comment blog - probably one that will rise next month with all the euthanasia debate earlier this week.

Sadly with Lesley having ceased blogging, her amazing graphs of female bloggers in this list are no more. Unless someone else picks up the baton on that one...

Here's the latest top 15 from the Wikio rankings, which work by links between sites registered with Wikio, rather than traffic levels. Judging by one or two of these, they need to add 'Unbelief' into the category title:

Wikio have just put up their list of top blogs for last month, here's the top 10

You can find the full list here. The most influential blogger in this field, Cranmer, is missed off because it doesn't look like you can be in 2 categories at once, and he's mixing it with the Politics blogs.

Comments:
 - This list is more diverse than it was a couple of years ago, when it was dominated by Anglican and Catholic blogs.
 - Nick Baines seems to have replaced Bishop Alan as the chief blogger in the purple, which has resulted in various religious correspondents now having him on speed dial, just beneath Terry Sanderson.
 - I've left Anglican Mainstream off the list, even though they're technically in the top 10, because it's not a blog. They cut and paste news stories from elsewhere and don't allow comments. At least Nadine Dorries writes her own stuff.

The ranking is mainly calculated by links from other blogs, rather than traffic, and you have to be registered with Wikio to qualify. So it's pretty limited, and doesn't register links from Twitter, Facebook or other social media platforms. But as the man says, life's complicated enough. If nothing else, it's a good starting point for discovering blogs you've never read before.

Rankety Rank

Anyone wondering where the Wikio religious blog rankings have gone (both of you), can rest easy, Church Mouse has picked up the scent, and has the latest list. For earlier lists, follow the bookmark below. Mouse also compiles an occasional Twurch of England Twitter ranking, so there is a happy convergance of all things listy at Mouse Towers (or Mouse Holes, or whatever Church Mouse campaign HQ is called).

Meanwhile, I'm busy trying to put a government together. Well, there's got to be a plan Z if the politicians don't manage to come up with anything. Strangely, I'm quite cheered by the thought of politicians talking to each other and working together across the party divide: I'm sure truth, justice and common sense are no respecters of political dividing lines, and I'd rather see them try to work as a team than not bother at all. My worry is that it doesn't get past public posturing and private political calculations, to genuine sitting down and thrashing things through.

As for 'the markets' setting a timetable for when we need to get a PM, my first thought is a rude one. I don't recall anyone voting for them.

With the demise of Technorati's log of links, Wikio is offering its own way of keeping up with links in and out of your blog, but you have to be signed up with them to use it. It also only tracks other Wikio blogs, so far as I can tell. Matt Wardman explains more about Wikio Labs and what it can do. Quantity of links in seems to be a big factor in their rankings.

Of course several of the above will tank horrendously over the next couple of months as people quit blogging for Lent, which, conveniently for Anglicans this year, occurs between General Synod and the official announcement of the General Election on May 6th.

Wikio Top Religious Blogs, January 2010 (i.e. December 2009)

The latest Wikio blog lists are out, here are the blogs in the top 250 which deal wholly or partially with religious issues, or from a faith viewpoint. I expect most of these to go up next month, as there's been an invasion of card-making and craft blogs over the Christmas period. Everything here must be taken with a pinch of salt - the top 2 are Iain Dale and Guido Fawkes, in that order, despite the fact that the latter had 1,800,000 visitors per month in 2009, nearly twice Iain Dale's total for the year.

the Wikio blurb says: The position of a blog in the Wikio ranking depends on the number and weight of the incoming links from other blogs. These links are dynamic, which means that they are backlinks or links found within articles. I still can't work out why blogs with twice my readership and links in, like Church Mouse, Clayboy, and Bishop Alan, aren't on this list.

The main trends seem to be a general falling off in blogs which focus wholly or partly on Anglican infighting, and the discovery of wikio by parts of the Roman Catholic blogosphere. Some of the first trend could be explained by a good month for cupcakes and home crafts, who could soon be challenging Dale and Guido for the top spots.

Church Mouse has his latest list of top twitterers in the CofE, so if you're trying to find out if your vicar is tweeting their sermons, that's the place to go.

Peter Ould has compiled the a list based on the slightly odd Alexa rankings, which has evolved into a top 40, and gives some indication of the breadth of Anglican blogging. Some of the juxtapositions are quite amusing: MadPriest is new into the chart, 1 place above Rowan Williams, or the 'Grand Tufti' as MP likes to call him. He's currently on a recruitment drive amongst Roman Catholics. Don't blame him: see above.

Unlike the two chaps above, I don't bother doing original research, I just crib from someone elses!!

A few things to note:
- mediawatchwatch has dropped out of the top 200, as has the SPCK blog, though I predict the latter will be back!
- there's a lot of movement, with the Catholic blogs appearing from nowhere, and a big jump in some of the main blogs dealing with the rolling blogosphere arguments within the Anglican Communion. There's a danger that the main blog presence by the Church of England will become Anglican Mainstream and Thinking Anglicans, which I don't think would be healthy at all.
- in case there were any doubts about the quality of this list, I merely note that Cupcake Craft Challenges is at no 154. Quite a few craft sites in there, in fact.

If you're wondering, 'why am I not on that list' (several candidates immediately spring to mind) then it's relatively easy to register your blog, or someone elses.

Follow the 'wikio rankings' tab for results from previous months. Meanwhile if you're a real rankings fan, a happiness table puts Britain 74th globally out of 143 countries, way behind Burma (oppressive dictatorship) and Georgia (war, Russian invasion), but ahead of Australia (sunshine and Shane Warne) and the USA (obesity, country and western music). Does that mean the glass is half full or half empty?

The latest Wikio blog rankings are out, with a new interface which only lets you see 20 blogs at a time, but it also means you get more detail on the blogs - it used to just be a list of names. That also accounts for the list being a bit longer this month, as I now have a slightly better idea of what some of them are about!....

the peloton is clustering nicely at the beginning of a new year (or the end of the old: the data is based on December traffic), and I'm struck by what a peculiar picture of Christendom is painted by this collection of bloggers......

If you think it's too peculiar, then you can register your favourite blogs with Wikio (you don't have to be the author) and watch the cream rise to the top. Other stuff has been known to rise to the top too, if you've ever seen the brewing process in action, so I'd better be careful with my metaphors.
